Are You Surviving or Thriving?

A little over a year ago, my husband and I were blessed to be witnesses of multiple marriage unions. It just so happened that two of these weddings, about a week apart, gifted us with the same exact wedding favor…a mini Jade plant. I was happy to receive the little plant and even happier to gift one to my mother. After all, she is the one who usually watches our kiddos while we are attending said festivities. I knew she would appreciate it because she has always had a green thumb and is well versed in caring for multiple types of plants. Little did I know that the Lord would use this gift to gift a lesson to me.

A Jade plant is in the succulent family and needs different care than most plants as it only needs very little water. It does not need to be watered everyday and too much water can actually kill the plant. I admit, I was feeling pretty proud that I knew how to take care of my little plant and that it hadn’t died like many of the other plants gifted to other guests. My little plant was surviving perfectly and looked as good as it did when I first got it. I was just about to give myself a pat on the back for a job well done when I went to visit my mom.

When I walked into her house, I noticed something that caught my eye and instantly halted that back pat of self recognition. On her window sill was the Jade plant I had gifted her, only it had sprouted new branches and quadrupled in size. How? How was it that we both had the same plant but her plant had flourished and grown considerably? Mine, though it had survived, stayed in exactly the same size and condition as when I first received it. I honestly had to ask if it was the same plant because it looked so different and had grown so much. Once she confirmed that it was in fact the same plant, it was obvious how it is that her plant had gone beyond simply surviving and completely shifted to thriving.

She gave her plant room to grow!

While we both knew the type of care needed for the plant to survive, she knew she couldn’t keep the plant in the same container if it was to thrive. She replanted her little Jade from the tiny pot into a larger pot so it would have room to grow…and grow it did!

Is there a place in your life where you have been surviving, but God is calling you to thrive? Are you willing to do what He asks, maybe what He has been asking, so you will thrive…so you will flourish?

Identify the place or places in your life where you have allowed yourself to stay small and stay stuck and BREAK OUT! It is time for you to grow and time for you to flourish. The Gardener of your heart is ready to expand your reach, expand your voice, expand your roots and expand your territory. Will you give Him room to give you room?

Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, “Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request. 1 Chronicles 4:10

I encourage you to make this your prayer. Pray it with not just a willing heart, but an obedient heart and watch how you will thrive!
